Westover Hills kitchen, bath and storage projects
The owners of this 1942 Westover Hills had a few projects at the top of their list: update the 1980s/90s kitchen, renovate the upstairs hall bath and build some storage in the living room. The finished kitchen saw the sink move to an adjacent wall and the cast iron radiator was changed to a wall-hung radiator across the room. Compared to the previous kitchen, the new space is lighter and more open. Cabinetry is stock Wolf with added walnut plywood boxes mounted beneath for open storage which allows the owner, a potter, to display some of her and her fellow artists’ work.
Moving upstairs, the hall bath retained the original layout with some updates. The cast iron radiator was removed in favor of a wall-mounted radiator with allowed a storage cabinet to be built in the former radiator’s floor space. The floor still had the original tile in mud bed which was removed and new subfloor installed. New plumbing supply and drain lines were installed to replace the existing galvanized drains and copper supply lines. Electrical was updated with new and added receptacles and new lighting. The original cast iron tub was re-coated in place. New ceramic tile on the tub walls and bath floor was installed over waterproofing substrate (Wedi for tub walls and Schluter Ditra for the bath floor). We built a new storage cabinet. A new top was installed on the owner-painted vanity. The bath was finished off with new paint.
Back downstairs, we built storage in the living room for books and other items. HVAC floor vents were re-worked to exit via the cabinet toe-kick. Sherwin Williams Snowbound finishes it off.
