Church Hill bath projects

Finished photo of primary bath

This project entailed updates to two baths in our client’s Libby Hill Terrace home. The first project was the primary bath which we’ll detail first. Once a trunk room, this area was converted to a full bath at some point in the past thirty to forty years and consisted of an alcove tub/shower, small vanity and toilet.  A ceiling-height knee wall had been added to house the tub and plumbing.  Removing the alcove tub and knee wall and replacing it with a freestanding soaking tub created a cleaner, more light-filled space.  Since the guest bath was to be converted to a walk-in shower, it was deemed not necessary to have a shower in the primary bath.

Original pine flooring was removed to allow us to re-work plumbing and assess the framing. Additionally, a proper subfloor needed to be installed for tile. The floor joists required leveling but were fortunately free of water or other damage.  To prepare the exterior brick walls for tile substrate (Schluter Kerdi), furring strips were added to achieve a plumb surface.

New supply and drain lines were added as we were moving the locations of the sink and tub. After new subfloor was installed, walls were patched, Schluter Kerdi membrane was applied to the wall areas over xp drywall to receive tiled wainscoting adjacent to the freestanding tub. Schluter Ditra membrane was added to the floor and the process of tiling was next.

The floor and wainscoting tile is complete in the photos below. Next would be installing plumbing fixtures (sink, tub, toilet, faucets) and final paint.

We also replaced the hall entry door to the bath with a clear fir, full glass door to match the pocket door to the bedroom that was installed a few years earlier.

After the last items in primary bath were checked off the list, we had some photos taken of the finished product!

Next up, after a break of several months, was work to the guest bath. This was a smaller project with the main goal to convert from a tub shower to a walk-in shower. Here are a few before photos:

The tub and existing tile were removed and the framing modified and repaired to accept new subfloor, shower drain, shower pan and tile substrate on the walls. Furring strips were added to the exterior wall as well as blocking for a grab bar.

Tile prep and install were next, followed by paint touch-ups and custom shower glass. We had some professional photos taken of the finished shower area:
